Roses and Castles
The Narrowboat Skills Centre is very pleased to announce that Phil Speight the renowned sign writer and painter has agreed to run courses showing the traditional art of painting Roses and Castles
Phil is one of the most experienced and influential traditional canal boat painters of his generation.
Trained as a coach painter in the 60’s he became a full time painter, sign-writer and decorator of traditional canal boats in the early 80’s. Since then he has earned an enviable reputation as a canal professional – not only as a skilled and dedicated painter but also as a teacher of the traditional skills he cares for and studies so passionately.
He held the highest level of Accreditation in The Waterways Craft Guild as a Boat-painter, Decorator and Sign writer.
During the two days Phil will not only explain (in his own inimitable and entertaining way) the traditional methods of painting Roses and Castles but will share his wealth of knowledge of the history of the craft and the many styles that developed over time. Can you tell a Frank Jones from a Frank Nurser? Phil can.
The course is very hands on and all materials necessary will be provided. Phil will explain the steps to paint the perfect rose and show you the correct way to layout bunches of roses depending on where they are being painted. With the addition of the leaves and daisies how to turn your roses into canal art. As well as roses Phil will be showing you the simple steps to layout and paint castles. All students will have practice boards to start on and then a finish board to paint your masterpiece.
At the end of the course the student will be able to take the brushes home FOC and paints can be purchased at a discount.
This course sponsored by Craftmaster paints.
Duration: 2 days
Maximum # students 8
Minimum # students 3
Attended this course at Debdale Marina, can honestly say both myself and my husband thoroughly enjoyed it. Phil is absolutely fantastic, he is informative and helpful guiding us beginners to be able to produce a passable painting to take home. Would definitely recommend this course to anyone with a passing interest in painting and definitely to anyone looking to add their own personal touch to their own boat. Thank you Phil for your patience and for imparting a small amount of your skill and knowledge.
