Why do you need the RYA First Aid Course?
Unfortunately, the idyllic life of cruising the canals and rivers in a narrowboat can sometimes be spoilt by an accident or medical emergency.
The canal system is 200 years old and Health and Safety was not part of the design of the infrastructure. As a result, there are many instances where it is possible to fall foul of the engineering or design of the environment you are enjoying.
Accidents do happen and they are occasionally fatal. So, this is the time when we call the emergency services, assuming there is a signal on the cell phone.
Do you know where you are? Is there vehicular access? Where is the nearest road? Can you manage the situation until expert help arrives?
This is where knowledge of first aid is invaluable to you and your loved ones.
The RYA First Aid course will teach you how you can help in these situations and teach you techniques that will buy vital time while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
The course covers many types of injury that can be sustained, including drowning, hypothermia, bleeding, wounds, and fractures and how to treat them. It covers the action to take in cases of illness like heart disease, choking, diabetes, strokes, shock. Many of these skills can make the difference to someone’s ongoing quality of life.
Undoubtedly this one day course is essential for all boaters.
